Corn Canning Industry

By 1913, Maine employed 7,000 people in corn factories, one-third of them women. Maine was ranked third in the country in corn packing, behind Illinois and New York. The season lasted a mere three weeks.

Franklin Farm Products Cooperative, established in 1929 was the last cannery to disappear from Farmington’s landscape in 1969. The plant was located where present day McDonald’s restaurant and Irving’s gas station are.
